About Toby Wilkins
Carpentry runs in the family. My brother is a cabinetmaker in Athens, Tenn., where we were raised. It wasn't what our parents had in mind for us.
I went to college when I was 18, because I was supposed to. I majored in geology. When I was 19, I dropped out and told my father I was going to be a carpenter. He didn't like it much, and as he stormed out of the room, my mother looked at me and said, Well, if you're going to be a carpenter, be a good one.
In 1985, at age 27, I went back to college at East Tennessee State University and received a B.S. degree in Construction Technology, which proved to be surprisingly useful in a profession usually learned on the job. For instance, in a time-and-motion course designed for manufacturing, I learned principles I applied to carpentry, and I became known for my efficiency.
As the years have gone by, and as I get older, I try to keep things simple. I'm no longer a general contractor with a big crew. But I still can help land and business owners plan for building, renovating, remodeling, or putting on an addition. For more about project consulting, click here.
Primarily these days, I just like to do carpentry. That's one reason I particularly enjoy doing staircases: they are an artistic and technical challenge. I also take pride in other finish carpentry work: creating Victorian-style door moldings or bringing a neglected house back to life.
Please contact me if you'd like to talk about your project. You will find that I can turn your ideas into a pleasing reality, that the work will be completed in a timely way, and that the cost will be fair.
